Construction on London 2012’s Olympic stadium is now complete by the design practice, Populous. Started in May 2008, the 80.000-seat stadium has grown over the past three years from its foundations into one of the most remarkable buildings on London’s eastern skyline. The final piece of turf was laid on March 29^th at an event attended by ODA – Olympic Delivery Authority – Chairman, John Armitt.

According to ODA the construction is complete three months ahead of schedule and cost £10 million less that the original estimate. With construction now complete, work will continue on the fit-out of the new stadium. The final track surface will be laid later this year.

Rod Sheard, Senior Principal at Populous, the Stadium architect said: “The construction of the world’s most environmentally friendly Olympic Stadium has taken just over 1,000 days, in the world of major construction it could be considered a sprint, its completion marks the beginning of the end of the construction phase of London’s Olympic Games. We can now all look forward to just under 500 days of the final preparation to when the world will see this innovative design perform for the first time.”

Esperienza Italia 150 by ARC’s

In order to celebrate the 150^th Anniversary of Italian Unity, Nutella has commissioned ARC’s design studio to conceive a limited edition – Esperienza Italia 150 – capable of expressing the soul of Italian excellence.

The studio has interpreted the project in four themes: Arts (music, poetry, cinema), Design, Landscape&Architecture and Historical topics. This special collection represents Nutella’s wish of embracing all Italians, from the South to the North, as a sole big family.

Andrew Myers’ Screw Art is the eye-popping result of a painstaking and multi-step process. From a plywood panel overlaid with phone book pages, he creates three-dimensional portraits by making use of thousands of screws, which are fastened in holes that were previously drilled to outline his works.

Born in Braunshweig, Germany and raised in the Spanish city of Ciudad Real, the California-based artist has attended for two and a half years the Laguna College of Art and Design.

His particular style is not only the result of this creative training – he developed his skills through advanced figurative sculpture and accelerated painting curriculum – but mostly the fruit of his drive, passion, and leap of faith into work as a full time artist.

T-box Concept by Qian Jiang & Ale Leonetti Luparini

Wind power is the conversion of wind energy into a useful form of energy, such as using turbines to make electricity, mills for mechanical power, pumps for pumping water or drainage, or sails to propel ships. Wind energy, as an alternative to fossil fuels, is plentiful, renewable, widely distributed, clean, produces no greenhouse gas emissions during operation, and already represents about 2% of worldwide electricity usage.

Aware of that, the duo of designers, Qian Jiang and Ale Leonetti Luparini, has conceived the T-box Concept which is a power generator that harnesses wind-energy when a train moves across the tracks. The box kind of merges with the sleepers on the tracks and houses all the components necessary to harness, store and supply converted power.

This project arises as a sensible response to the fact that one can not rely on nature as this inexhaustible source. Instead, the T-box Concept optimizes a human activity.

“My shelves aim to invite the user to interact with its form. They utilize various ‘play signals’ that engage the user to touch, feels, and react to the object”, says Jiyoung Seo, a design student at HDK School of Design and Crafts in Gothenburg, Sweden.

The Catalyst is a little shelf with a flap of silicon to keep books in place. Furthermore, Jiyoung’s creation can also be used as a bookmark by slotting a book over the flap.

Story Tent Light by Hong Ying Guo

The designer Hong Ying Guo has blent good old “ingredients” to conceive an infallible soporific effect. The Story Tent Light is the product of the combination between a nice bedtime story and a pleasing nightlight.

The interactive tent shaped device projects sequential light images through interchangeable frames to tell a brief animated story. According to its creator, “this active design encourages the use of imagination and provides tranquil light for a peaceful sleep”.

Ausgebrannt by Kaspar Hamacher

German for “burnt out”, Ausgebrannt is the name of the project run by the Belgian designer, Kaspar Hamacher, who makes stools from wooden logs by setting them on fire. The main idea consists in stripping bark from the logs then burning away certain sections to create legs.

Hamacher’ stools were displayed on circular landings at the Biologiska museum in Stockholm as part of “20 Designers at Biologiska”.

Italian Restaurant by Sotovikis

The so-called “Soho of Athens” – the district of Psirri – has a brand new and quite charming attraction. The elegant Il Buco is an Italian restaurant designed by the Athens-based, Sotovikis, and is located on the third floor of a neo-classical building.

Three separate spaces cluster around a cocktail bar. The whiteness of walls, ceilings and floors interact with strong black door frames, fine iron drapery bars and stylish light fixtures from Droog and Danish. Mismatched wood-frame chairs collected from the antique shops of the neighboring Monastirak give the restaurant a spontaneous and light climate.

The owner, Lucas Papaspirou, counts on this summery, breezy, Greek atmosphere created by the interior design to withstand the competition. Besides, the plus of having great views of the magnificent Acropolis makes the entrepreneur even more confident that Il Buco will be successful.

Esteban and Sebastián Suárez of Mexico City-based, BNKR Arquitectura, have definitely pleased God, the devoted and religious ones, and also the lovers of architecture with their recently finished project.

Located in the Mexican city of Acapulco, the Sunset Chapel – only 120 square meters in size – arises as this stunning home for reflections, contemplation and good thoughts. Its bare-concrete structure, the slatted walls and a glass cross that allows this warming lighting and atmosphere, gracefully interact with the surrounding nature.

Esteban and Sebastián took advantage of an enormous boulder that already ruled the site to give the chapel this charming elevated shape, thus allowing the spectacular view to be visible from within.

Guided by the main principle that “designing for failure is essential for success”, the design consultancy, Continuum, has created this conceptual packaging for a single cigarette. The 1Z – the name is a reference to “loosies” – takes into consideration that smokers who are trying to quit are constantly susceptible to setbacks. Therefore, the idea is to avoid this setback to turn into a whole pattern of failure, that is, one cigarette rather than a whole pack and so on.

The triangular pack – this form was chosen because it conveys that the product is something radically different from a standard pack of cigarettes – contains one cigarette, two matches and a stick of gum. According to Continuum, “the gum provides resolution to that setback and offers a starting point to help the smoker continue quitting”.

The British MINI has just launched the conceptual Rocketman at the International Geneve Motor Show. Wide-opening doors and an adjustable luggage compartment that can be adapted by pulling out a drawer at the back of the car characterize the guiding principle of this project. A response to the requirements of mobile lifestyles in the big cities of the future, the 3+1-seater with 3 doors features integrated fibre-optics that illuminates the interior and a glass roof, which is imprinted with the Union Jack.

“The MINI Rocketman Concept body is shaped by an avant-garde interpretation of time-honoured brand features. Innovative construction techniques allow the principle used in the classic Mini of providing the maximum amount of room on the smallest possible footprint to be carried over to the mobility challenges of urban areas in the 21^st century. The MINI Rocketman Concept measures 3.419 metres (approx. 11 ft. 3 in.) in length, adding just a few extra centimetres to the front and rear of the brand’s founding father born in 1959.”

French designer Emma Marga Blanche has conceived these pleated lamps made from folded polypropylene and fan outwards from their bases, creating a cluster of precise but organic forms when positioned together. Called Rhubarb, the lamps were presented as part of 20 Designers at Biologiska, which she co-curated with Fredrik Färg during Stockholm Design Week.

Fly Paper Clock by James Auger & Jimmy Loizeau

Inspired by carnivorous plants, the duo of designers, James Auger and Jimmy Loizeau, has created the prototype of a wall clock which utilizes this unique source of energy. Instead of electricity derived from batteries or solar panels, the power of the Fly Paper Clock is supplied by flies.

The insects are attracted to a trap – a revolving sheet of paper – in which they get stuck and afterwards killed by a special substance. The consequential organic material will be converted into energy due to the specific system conceived by the designers. It takes eight flies to supply the clock for twelve hours.

McVillage by UXUS

Comissioned by McDonald’s, UXUS design consultancy has conceived an inspiring children’s activity area for kids under 7 years of age, bringing the theme of “what I eat, what I do” to life. The entire project is a spatial application of graphic design as the use of images instead of words transcends those barriers associated with different geographical places and children’s ages.

The playful aesthetic stimulates imagination and represents a phase of the journey food goes through before finally arriving at the dinner table, creating a connection between kids and the education about food and cooking.
